The Perils of Thinking You've 'Made It': The Importance of Ongoing Growth and Development
Success is a journey, not a destination. It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that once we've reached a certain level of success, we can rest on our laurels and coast through life. However, this mindset can be dangerous, as it can lead to complacency and stagnation.
According to one of The Awakened Man Project's mentors, a billionaire business leader, "the moment you think you've become successful, is when you are dead." This statement highlights the importance of always striving for growth and improvement, rather than becoming stuck in a comfort zone. Success is temporary, and it must be continually tended to and built upon in order to be maintained.
I see so many people, especially entrepreneurs, who reach a certain level of success and comfort and then think that they have made it, so they don't have to do anything else. What happens is that they usually do not stay around very long or are not able to maintain their success at the level they wished. "Having made it" simply means we have hit a milestone on our journey towards success. We will make it many times along the way. Success, like everything else in both business and life, will not last unless we work hard to make it last. We can't expect that once we reach a certain level, we can maintain it by doing nothing. Success needs to be tended to, just like anything else. To maintain success and build on it, we must always be reaching, growing, and developing.
For this week's Awakened Man Coaching Challenge, we encourage you to consider how you will know when you've "made it" and what steps you will take to continue building on your success. Understanding your own definition of success and having a plan in place to maintain and build upon it will help ensure that your journey towards success never ends. Remember, "making it" is just the beginning.
